Originally Released in 1981, the debut of the legendary keyboardist from Eberhard Weber's Colours band and later the Jan Garbarek Group, Freigeweht presented Rainer Br?ninghaus as a highly original and idiosyncratic sound sculptor in his own right, accompanied by ECM stalwarts Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn and drummer Jon Christensen as well as oboist Brynjar Hoff. In a review of the album from the year of it's release, the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung traced Rainer's influences and minimalist designs back to Steve Reich, calling Br?ninghaus "the most imaginative musician to employ minimal art in the realm of jazz. Though he neither uses minimal art as ideology nor as replacement for a rhythm section, but in a more playfully constructive way, as an element that can undergo change." Jon Christensen adds uncompromising propulsion to Br?ninghaus's lyrical themes, which are evocatively fleshed out by Wheeler and Hoff's contemplative tones. 180g LP. Alfie was released in 1966 as the soundtrack to the British film of the same name. This six-cut date was arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson, featuring a mix of musicians supporting Rollins including Kenny Burrell (guitar), J.J. Johnson (trombone) and Phil Woods (alto sax), among others. Rollins attempts to capture the textures of life through his incisive and energetic playing, his coherent improvisations and variations on musical themes. While "Alfie's Theme" and it's variants make the most lasting impression, "He's Younger Than You" is touching, laced with regret. And the sensual, relaxed "On Impulse" has a nice sense of immediacy. Green Vinyl. The arrival of a new Mogwai album - their eleventh - is cause for great celebration. The album's title, The Bad Fire, is a working-class Glaswegian term for Hell. It reflects the difficult time that members of the band were going through. New to the studio was American producer John Congleton, known for his work with Explosions In The Sky, Sigur Rós, John Grant and pretty much everyone in between. Congleton's work can be heard on the album's three singles. The album opener "God Gets You Back" sounds like Daft Punk being hunted by My Bloody Valentine, while "Fanzine Made Of Flesh" sounds like a victory parade for a baby yeti; and "Lion Rumpus" does actually sound like a lion rumpus. The music of Mogwai is a difficult thing to describe, but an easy thing to experience. At punishing volume, it can annihilate your body, leaving you as little more than a head which should by rights fall helplessly to the ground. Yet the music contains an updraft, a sense of beauty encased in the onslaught. This holds you up, suspended and empowered, reminding you that paradise is your birthright. This is especially true of The Bad Fire. It may have been created in dark conditions, but all that is transcended by the act of four musicians working together here, now, in the moment - the only place where Mogwai exist.

The trio of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Julie Fowlis, and Karine Polwart first came together as a writing experiment coming out of the pandemic lockdown. With touring off the calendar, multi-Award winning US singer-songwriter Carpenter was looking for something new and reached out to Fowlis and Polwart, two highly acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriters whose work she had long admired. Prompted by admiration and respect for each other’s work, the trio quickly came up with a plan and, once able, met in Northern Scotland for an extended writing retreat to see what magic could be made. The success of this initial experiment led to a second writing session and, in early 2024, the 10-song album Looking For The Thread was recorded at Real World Studios in Box, England, with Josh Kaufman (Bob Weir, The National, The Hold Steady) producing and a world-class band of musicians: Rob Burger (piano, organ, accordion, keys),Chris Vatalaro (drums, percussion), Cameron Ralston (bass), Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh (hardanger d’amore) and Josh Kaufman himself (guitar, keys). The album features tracks written by all three artists, who take turns performing and collaborating on each song. Looking For The Thread will release on January 24, 2025 with Thirty Tigers worldwide.
