Bauhaus and Love & Rockets co-founder David J Haskins, the man responsible for the lyrics of Bauhaus’ classic "Bela Lugosi's Dead," is releasing the first great protest song of the year, exclusively for RSD 2019. "Thoughts and Prayers" is a scathing rebuke of the United States for it's inability to stop the senseless mass school shootings that are killing our nation's children. Haskins bemoans the futility of "sending thoughts and prayers" to solve this tragic issue and also the inherent hypocrisy of the present government.
The 7" single "Thoughts and Prayers" comes packaged in a sleeve with a striking picture of a rifle with a bloody red circle around it and a line drawn through it. The complete lyrics of "Thoughts and Prayers" are printed on the back so the nation does not miss a word of this powerful call to action. The B-Side is a haunting cover of Emily Jane Whites's "Hole in the Middle," another powerful political song that is equally as relevant today.

David J is currently touring the US on the massively successful Ruby World Tour with Peter Murphy, celebrating 40 years of the music of Bauhaus. RSD 2019 is the perfect time for him to raise his voice against America's shameful tragedy with his newest release, "Thoughts and Prayers."

The Pagans, one of America's first and most influential punk bands, was formed in 1977. Along with contemporaries like The Dead Boys and Pere Ubu, The Pagans and lead singer Mike Hudson literally wrote the book on punk rock. Releasing the now classic 'Street Where Nobody Lives' 7" on Drome Records in 1978, The Pagans went on to enjoy a successful thirty-plus year run. Recorded in 2016, this 7" marks the final record by The Pagans. Mike Hudson, the groups lead singer, passed away in late 2017. All artwork and audio was approved by Hudson prior to his passing, and this pink vinyl 7" package should serve as a fitting send off to a man and a band who had a great deal to do with punk rock history.

Available for the first time on vinyl for RSD Drops 2021, The Lost Philip Glass Sessions by The Raybeats is a memento of a singular moment in New York's cultural history: a time where it felt like anything could happen, and it did. “The Raybeats represented the intersection of multiple streams of creativity, where new music and popular culture were colliding,” says Philip Glass, who joined the band in Green St. Studio along with Michael Riesman and Kurt Munkacsi on June 4th, 1982. “When we think of music and New York of that period, we think of groups like The Raybeats.” The band didn't know what to expect when they walked into the studio on that fateful day, and they wouldn't realize what they had until thirty years later. Philip Glass was already amassing an international audience at the time, and his addition to these songs was just another moment of creative spontaneity.

It comes to record stores as part of RSD Drops, for the first time on vinyl.

I Don't Prefer No Blues [Vinyl]

ON SALE $17.98 Vinyl: $4.98 Buy

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

At age 82, bluesman Leo “Bud” Welch rocks on stage like a teenager – dancing and spinning as he beats out jagged chords and grimy solos on his pink, sparkle-covered guitar. That raw youthful energy and Welch’s old-school juke-joint jones blend full-throttle in the 10 songs on I Don’t Prefer No Blues, his second release for Fat Possum Records’ subsidiary Big Legal Mess. The album is a garage-blues manifesto that weds waves of prickly six-string distortion and gutbucket d rums with Welch’s smoke-and-ash voice and mud-crusted guitar – and lives up to Fat Possum’s history of producing edgy but deeply rooted recordings by artists like Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside.

Sometimes the demo recording of a song has a vibe that cannot be duplicated. Whether that first recording is a voice memo on your phone or half haphazardly recorded with one mic in the room, there’s an undeniable charm to these recordings. If you spend some time listening to them, when the “real” recording is made, many times one has a hard time letting go of the demo. The medical term for this is called “Demoitis”. On that note, Big Crown Records is proud to present Demoitis Vol. 1, a release that is easily a decade in the making.

The songwriting process can be cathartic, especially if you're trying to make sense of things in your life through the music. Lady Wray wrote and recorded the demo version of “Guilty” just days after her brother was incarcerated. The rawness of what she was going through will surely send a chill through the listener’s soul.

Some of these demos were recorded to pitch the music to the label or producer. Bobby Oroza’s “This Love” demo (originally called “Breaktru”) is him at home with an MPC, recording music to show to the guys at Timmion in hopes of working together. Brainstory’s version of “Breathe” also falls into this category. There are cases where someone writes a song for an artist and actually sings it as a reference for them to learn the tune. “Will I Get Off Easy” & “Regenerate” were both originally sung by Leon Michels for Lee Fields to learn and record them later. Of course no one can hold a candle to Mr Lee Fields’ vocals, but the El Michels versions of these are killers in their own right. Again, this is what this record is about, not better or worse, but enjoying all the steps in the process.

Paul Schalda from Paul & The Tall Trees sent us the demos to his sophomore album and they blew us away. When he got in the studio to make the record there was a strong sentiment of sticking close to the demos and trying to recapture that intimacy. On the other side of that coin some of these are a testament to the production. Liam Bailey’s “Don’t Blame NY” demo is something of a loose freestyle that comes across as a Jazz number. It is always interesting to see what twists and turns a song takes from inception to the finished version.

We hope you enjoy Demotis Vol. 1 as much as we do. It is a pleasure to share this stuff with the world. It is a great listen and we hope it inspires people to write and record more music with whatever means you have of doing so.

1. Lady Wray "Guilty", 2. El Michels Affair "Will I Get Off Easy", 3. Bobby Oroza "Breaktru", 4. Paul & The Tall Trees "Then We'll Wave", 5. Holy Hive "Blue Light", 6. Lee Fields & The Expressions "Lover Man", 7. Brainstory "The Promise of Grace (Interlude), 8. Brainstory "Peter Pan", 9. Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band "Round & Round", 10. The Shacks "For Real", 11. After legendary English musician David Bowie started his movie career by playing the lead in The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) he was starring in Just a Gigolo (Schöner Gigolo, armer Gigolo). The West German movie about a Prussian officer who works as a gigolo in a brothel run by the Baroness (Marlene Dietrich) after he returns home from the great war, included different songs. Bowie contributed a piece of music to the film; his so-called "Revolutionary Song", played by a band called The Rebels. Later it became a collector’s item. Besides this track the 7-inch include the 1928 title song Just a Gigolo, performed by Marlene Dietrich. It was her last film appearance and last song she recorded during her lifetime.

Revolutionary Song / Just a Gigolo is available as a limited edition of 8.000 individually numbered copies on transparent blue vinyl.

Hailing from NYC, The Blues Magoos took the folk/blues soundtrack of their mid-sixties Greenwich Village contemporaries and forged it into a tough, garage/psych hybrid that attracted fans as quickly as it angered folk club owners, incensed by the band's volume and unhinged stage show! Signed by Mercury Records in 1966, their inaugural single for the label, a reading of John D. Loudermilk's "Tobacco Road," was a churning 4 1/2 minute(!) plunge into crazed guitar/organ/drum/bass pyrotechnics with vocals careening over the top. The release hailed the arrival of a new and wholly unique voice on the rock scene. It was also a signpost for a new genre. One of the first albums to use "psychedelic" in the title, it arrived right on time for a generation ready to expand their consciousness with the aid of their turntables. The album's next single, band-penned "(We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet," featured one of the all-time great riffs, an insistent bass run over which keyboards swirled and unison vocals chanted. An absolute smash, "(We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet" zoomed to #5 on the national pop charts and made the band an exotic household name. In total, The Blues Magoos released three amazing albums and eight incredible singles on Mercury. Longtime fans, Sundazed has now gathered all sixteen A- and B-sides together on The Blues Magoos: Mercury Singles (1966-1968). Featuring the accurate, original mono single mixes from the Mercury masters, these songs have NEVER sounded better!
